Fund Izzy Abbass's project to build a resource website for Colorado veterans in higher education

The Challenge:

Colorado’s returning veterans, fresh from stints in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other points all over the world, find themselves in a uniquely difficult position when it comes to re-assimilating into civilian culture. Many of these men and women are returning home, 3 or 4 years out of high school, but with only life experience to their name. They are hungry to learn, and higher education is the gateway to the rest of their lives.

The higher education system for veterans is complicated. Former soldier-students don’t always feel “alike” with their fellow students. The skills learned and earned overseas don’t easily or immediately translate to a major, and GI Bill benefits can be complicated to say the least.

How Much?

$2140

Deadline:

September 6th, 2013

Impact:

Colorado ranks 10th nationally in terms of Veterans going to school on the Post 9-11 GI Bill and this number is expected to double with reductions in our military. Several institutions in Colorado are setting the example nationally in creating truly Veteran programs but finding these programs is not easy for these incoming students. Further, many institutions want to know what additional steps they can take to make their programs more accommodating to those who have done so much for us all through their service. This site will provide resources to Veterans in their search for institutions meeting their needs as well as for institutions seeking to provide Veteran services.

  • 26,000 Colorado veterans returning to higher education from battlefields and bases all over the world will access powerful information and guidance to ensure they get the most out of their educations
  • Veterans will transition from Soldier to Student to Career
  • University Admins will gain information on best practices and retention to ensure that veterans have the best educational experience possible
