Brunch With A Purpose 2009 gets holiday gifts for kids in need!

Brunch with a Purpose gives foster kids in troubled homes gifts and new clothes for the holidays, bridging a gap between the turmoil of their lives and a normal holiday experience.

Update: Wow! Today was an enormous success! Our house was full of an incredible expanded network of friends as we celebrated Brunch With A Purpose 2009 and provided presents for 29 children. We'll also sponsor six more children with some of the donations that we received! We received lots of donations for Drug Court too! In addition to hundreds of gifts, the community gave $3,069.14 in cash donations. Paired with Beanstalk's $1,000, we have $4,069.14 for Brunch supplies and lots more gifts.

Every year I host a fundraising brunch where guests bring gifts, not for one another, but for kids living in foster care. Because many of these young people don’t expect much of the holiday season, this small effort has a huge impact, and gives them a sense of normalcy during the holiday season.

The group of children with whom I work is a very vulnerable population. They are the subject of dependency and neglect cases. Most are in foster care and some have just been returned to live with their parents. Children in foster care usually don’t get the things, like new clothes and gifts, that their classmates do. They’re frequently made fun of for having old clothes and used things. Brunch With a Purpose provides new clothes and holiday gifts for the children. Without community help, many of these children would not receive holiday gifts.

About a month before Brunch, I post a wish list for each child on the Brunch With A Purpose website. As members of the community purchase presents, I cross them off the list. On the day of the Brunch, guests bring  gifts addressed to each child from Santa as well as donations which I use to purchase the rest of the gifts. I then deliver presents to each foster home, making the holidays brighter for kids.

Budget:

Last year we spent about $500 on food an drinkas for the Brunch. This year, I would like to raise $1,500 for Brunch supplies, web hosting, and food and drinks. Of course, left over money will go to buying more gifts.

Since we have sponsors for most of the food, the greatest need is presents for the kids. As Brunch gets closer, I will post a wish list for each kid. Pick something you would like to give, and I’ll cross it off the list. If you don’t see something that grabs your interest (though we’re sure you will), cash donations can help to put the finishing touches on each kid’s list and to host the Brunch.
